Nanaimo Amenities

Retail: There are more than a dozen indoor and outdoor malls in Nanaimo, including downtown’s Port Place Mall and North Nanaimo’s Woodgrove Centre, Vancouver Island’s largest shopping centre.

Nanaimo’s waterfront Seawall and Maffeo Sutton Park are popular spots for walkers, runners, cyclists and skaters alike. You’ll find fishermen at the crab dock, children playing in the expansive playground, and people of all ages meandering the Swy-a-Lana lagoon’s walkways.

Restaurants and Cafés: Culinary delights await at every turn. Nanaimo’s chefs are showcasing their talents, whether it’s fine dining at the Firehouse Grill, elevated casual fare at the renowned Nest Bistro, Mediterranean cuisine at Asteras Greek Taverna or farm-to-table gastronomy at Gabriel’s Café.

Nanaimo Aquatic Centre: The centre boasts one of the largest wave pools in western Canada and one of the island’s most popular 50-meter pools. A centre for all ages, there are weight rooms, a café, swimwear shop, and a physiotherapy clinic.

The Port Theatre hosts more than 250 performances and musical events a year and is home to the Vancouver Island Symphony. Or head over to the White Rabbit Coffee Co for pop-up live shows, or drop in at the Queens for some homegrown musical talent.

Formerly Malaspina College, Vancouver Island University’s main campus is in Nanaimo. VIU recently opened a new Health and Science Centre and a renovated Marine, Automotive and Trades Complex, and plays a pivotal role in the educational, cultural and economic growth of Nanaimo.
